Soulless: The Graphic Novel

Script Prologue: Waiting

Soulless Script: Prologue

PAGE ONE
1) Early in the morning, at Portland International Airport, two young men sit, surrounded by people saying goodbye to family and friends. Several bags are on the seats by both men, showing that they’re both going to get on a plane soon. One of them, wearing a suit, looks at the planes, obviously tired. The other man is wearing a hoodie and jeans, the hood down. When comparing the two, one can see a family resemblance. The man wearing a hoodie is looking at a large group of people, mostly young women.

2) The suit looks above the windows and sees a large digital clock.

3) Close-up of the clock, showing that it’s 5:42 AM.

4) Suit is nudging Hoodie with his elbow, still looking at the clock.

Suit: Hey.

5) A closer look Hoodie’s face, showing that he’s concentrating on someone in the group.

6) Suit lightly pushing Hoodie, now looking at him.

Suit: Hey, idiot. She’s late.

PAGE TWO
1) Hoodie adjusts so he’s sitting on one leg, so he can easily turn to talk to Suit.

Hoodie: No she’s not. It’s only five.

2) Suit points to the giant clock he was looking at.

3) Hoodie looks up, Suit still pointing.

Hoodie: Huh. So she is.

4) Suit is no longer pointing at the clock, now looking at Hoodie, who is still looking up.

Suit: Where’s your phone?

Hoodie: My pocket.

Suit: You have Kat’s number on it?

5) Suit holds out his hand to receive the phone.

Hoodie: Yeah, but you have your own phone.

Suit: It’s in the car.

Hoodie: That sucks for you.

6) Hoodie looks at Suit, sees his annoyed face.

7) Hoodie, no longer smiling, puts one hand in his jacket pocket.

8) Hoodie handing the phone to Suit.

PAGE THREE
1) Hoodie turns again while Suit gets up.

2) Hoodie looks back at the group (the POV in this panel is from a little behind and above Hoodie’s head.

3) Large panel: The group he’s looking at shows an old woman and several young women, all looking sad, saying goodbye to another woman, standing side-by-side with a strong-looking man with light brown skin. Her left hand’s ring finger has a large diamond ring on it, implying that she’s engaged to the strong man. A little ways away from them is a young man, skinny but not sickly so, holding a gym bag and small handle of a backpack with wheels on the bottom.

4) A close-up of Hoodie’s face, concentrating on someone again.

5) Close-up of the skinny man’s face, showing a bored, impatient look.

PAGE FOUR
1) Suit standing, his back to Hoodie, his head turned to show that he’s talking to Hoodie. A couple musical notes come from the phone, showing that it’s ringing.

Suit: It’s ringing.

Hoodie: (still looking at the skinny man) No way! They do that now?

Suit: Shut up.

2) Same view as the last panel, but the old woman in the group is hugging the engaged woman, implying that they’re related and/or close.

Kat (over phone): Hi, this is Katlin. I’m busy, so leave a message.

Suit: Hey, Kat. It’s me. You’re late, and people are starting to get on the plane, so hurry up and get here. I love you. Bye.

3) Suit flips the phone shut. In the background, the old woman is now hugging the skinny man, who is returning the hug with the hand not holding the bag with wheels, though he’s still holding onto his gym bag as he hugs her.

4) Suit walks to his seat, holding the phone out and now looking at the group of people.

Suit: Here’s your phone. Which one are you staring at? The blonde in the sweater or the redhead?

5) Hoodie takes the phone as the suit sits, turning his body so he can look at the group.

Hoodie: The skinny guy.

Suit: Heh.

Hoodie: I got a question for you.

6) Suit looks at Hoodie, who is still staring at the skinny guy.

Suit: Yes, it’s okay of you’re gay.

Hoodie: Okay. First, shut up. Second, look at him. Is that Henry?

PAGE FIVE
1) Close-up of the skinny guy, from Suit’s POV.

2) Close-up of Suit, who is squinting to get a good look at the man.

Suit: Yeah, I think it is. Maybe, I haven’t seen him since middle school.

3) Suit and Hoodie, both looking on, the panel showing them from the other side of the chairs. Suit’s pointing at something.

Suit: And I know for sure who she is.

Hoodie: Who, the blonde in the sweater or the redhead?

4) Suit, no longer pointing at the group, looks at Hoodie, who is still looking at the group.

Suit: No, the one with the bags. Holding the black guy’s hand. That’s Julia.

Hoodie: Sister?

Suit: Yeah.

5) Hoodie is pointing at the group.

Hoodie: Then that’s Scott MacIntire. Kat told me she ran into them and found out they just got married. She’s pregnant, too, so they’re moving to New York to have the kid.

6) Suit looks back at the group, Hoodie no longer pointing.

Suit: Why New York?

Hoodie: The guy’s dad is super-rich, so they’re mooching off of him. He’s a judge or something.

Suit: So why’s Henry going with them?

PAGE SIX
1) Hoodie shrugs, Suit looking curiously at the group.

Hoodie: I don’t know, maybe to help with the kid? Why should I care? Henry Collins is a douche bag.

Suit: He’s not a douche, man. His dad died.

2) Hoodie and Suit look at each other.

Hoodie: Being half an orphan is no excuse to mope around for all of high school and be a dick to everyone. That guy’s an asshole and he deserves baby shit duty if you ask me. Did we act like dicks when Grandpa died?

3) Suit looks annoyed and surprised.

Suit: The grandpa that we saw a total of seven times in our lives? Imagine if Dad died.

Hoodie: Bad example. I hate our father.

4) Hoodie is looking towards the group again, Suit continuing on.

Suit: Yeah, but that was, like, a really happy family. I mean, picture having nothing bad happen to anyone in your family. Middle-class money and housing, a cop dad, all that good stuff.

5) Hoodie’s POV, looking at Henry again.

Suit (word bubble): Then he’s suddenly dead without reason. No more income, no one else of the same gender in your house, then no more sister because she went off to Oregon State and you’re living with Mom in a crappy house you have pay for because she’s not fit for work, traumatized when she saw her husband stabbed to death in front of her eyes.

6) Hoodie looks at Suit.

Hoodie: And Justin said the guy had his way with her, too.

Suit: See? Terrible situation.

PAGE SEVEN
1) Hoodie and Suit sit normally, now, both thinking.

Hoodie: If you feel so sad about it, go talk to him.

Suit: No thanks. I hate that guy.

2) Hoodie points at Suit.

Hoodie: See? I told you.

Suit: Well, he is sort of a douche, but it’s understandable. I guess I feel sorry for him.

Hoodie: Defending the honor of an asshole you don’t even talk to anymore.

Suit: Yeah, I guess.

3) Suit looks up at the clock again.

4) From Suit’s POV, the clock says 5:50.

5) Suit looking at Hoodie, who’s looking at the clock.

Suit: You think Kat’s going to miss her flight?

Hoodie: Maybe.

6) From behind her, the POV shows a woman with bags walking to Suit and Hoodie.

Kat: Hi, guys. Sorry I’m late. Traffic.

PAGE EIGHT

1) Hoodie and Suit stand up, Hoodie pointing at his brother.

Hoodie: That’s why this bastard made us show up an hour early.

2) Suit hugging Kat, Hoodie grabbing his bags.

3) Suit standing with Kat.

Suit: You ready to get on the plane?

Kat: Yeah. Let’s go.

4) Suit grabbing his own bags, Hoodie walking to Kat.

Hoodie: Hey, look at those people over there.

5) Hoodie is pointing at Henry’s group, most of the girls now waving goodbye as Julia and Scott grab their bags. Kat is squinting to get a good look at them.

Hoodie: Look. Henry Collins.

Kat: And his sister, mom and brother-on-law. What about them?

6) Suit walking to Hoodie and Kat. Hoodie nudging Suit with his elbow.

Suit: We were just talking about them.

Hoodie: And he tried to convince me that Henry wasn’t a dick.

PAGE NINE1) The three walking together, Kat grabbing her ticket form her purse.

Kat: And he totally is.

Hoodie: Yeah, but he caved.

2) Suit looking at Hoodie, angry, as the three continue walking.

Suit: He’s not that bad.

Kat: Come on, don’t try to say he’s a cool guy. Last time I ran into him, he was sitting behind the counter at Borders, calling everyone sheep and making fun of Lord of the Rings.

3) The three walk to the entrance of the plane, Kat giving her papers to the woman there.

Hoodie: Well, that’s always fun to do.

Kat: And he asked me out.

Hoodie: Now that’s classy.

4) Hoodie getting his papers out of one of his bags, the woman giving Kat’s papers back to her. Suit is looking back to Henry.

Suit: Well, if it was me who went through what he did…

5) Henry walking into the plane, behind Julia and Scott, who are holding hands.

Suit (word bubble out of panel): It would take a long time to try to understand why something like that happened to me and my family.

6) Henry putting his bags into the compartment above his seat.

Suit: And the fact that my sibling already got over it and found happiness wouldn’t exactly help.

7) Henry sitting in the window seat, Julia and Scott cuddling in their seats. Henry is looking out of the window.

Suit (word bubble out of panel): But I think moving to a new city would be a good fit for him, somewhere full of strangers that don’t pity him, that don’t really care about his history.

8) View from outside the plane, the panel showing Henry looking out of the window.

Suit (word bubble out of panel): I just hope he’s happy some day.

Hoodie (word bubble out of panel): Yeah, and you called me gay.

Suit (word bubble out of panel): Shut up.
